A fun game to reinforce sight words for two to four players.
This easy-to-play game is ideal for family fun at home or as an end of lesson activity. Features 300 high frequency words from phases two to six of the government Letters & Sounds phonics framework. Friendly fly cards are colour-coded with ‘tricky’ words highlighted in yellow, to remind children that they can’t sound out these words phonetically. The Game includes four plastic fly swatters, 150 double-sided flies and instructions.

Our testers loved the fast pace and friendly competitiveness of Sight Word Swat, which made this game a really fun way to reinforce sight words. As children are racing each other there is an element of time pressure, which makes it more exciting and challenging. It also promotes concentration and observational skills (to find the word they need) and perseverance (continuing to play even if they didn’t get the last word).
The instructions are simple but an adult may be needed to get the game started. It’s good that the adult can be in charge of calling out the word to swat, so they can decide on an easier or more difficult word – other children can also be the caller, improving their confidence in reading aloud. We suggest that children play with other’s of similar reading abilities, so that one player doesn’t always win and put the rest of the group off playing.
