Description
The Playground Engineering & Design Building Set gets problem solving in full swing. Including over 100 playground pieces, children use creativity and imagination to solve unique engineering challenges. Activity cards pose problems such as ‘Can you build a roof to cover the slide?’ and ‘How can you make the swing more stable?’. Guiding young learners through the engineering design process, each problem has more than one solution so can be revisited and redesigned again and again.
What our testers said
“I want to connect the chain to the slide, I wonder if it will work.” Boy aged 6
“This looks fun.” Girl aged 6
What our experts think
The Playground building set is an excellent resource for teaching children about science, technology and engineering. The ability to design their own playground really appeals to children who like being creative, whilst those who enjoy a challenge loved trying to solve the problems given. Children needed a little help to get started but quickly understood what to do. As they build their model, children can see for themselves how their design works in use, and also see the forces that might affect a full-sized playground.
While the playground theme really captures children’s imaginations – our testers liked building something familiar – the set also has amazing educational value. There are plenty of resources to support their learning; from easy to follow instructions with diagrams to a flowchart of the engineering design process. There are also planning sheets that encourage children to follow this design process, including coming up with alternative ideas and thinking about how to improve them. This is ideal for supporting the Design and Technology curriculum, which requires children to design a product to solve a problem, and evaluate their design throughout.
