What our experts think
Peppa Pig is a firm favourite with this age range, so children were instantly drawn to the toy; the familiar brand provides an excellent springboard for learning. Some of them even claimed it for themselves and carried it around with them! The children were focussed on the activity and were keen to keep on trying if they got the letter wrong; when they were successful they were really proud of themselves, which boosted their confidence. They repeated the sounds as they played, developing speech skills, and there is also plenty of scope for an adult to extend learning further. It would be good if the toy used the Jolly Phonics model (which is often used by teachers), but it does support children learning early letter and word recognition skills.
The two handles are a simple but welcome addition, as children at this age will be showing a dominant hand and this encourages both left- and right- handed use. The volume control was good (particularly if there is a lot of noise around the child) but we would have liked to see a power button to make this toy easier to travel with and store without accidentally turning the sounds on.
