What our experts think
This is a well made wooden toy which helps children to copy what they see in the real world. There was lots of learning as the children asked about the specific tools and used the new related vocabulary – this was not just limited to the naming of the tools as they also spoke and learned about the different actions they performed (for example sawing, cutting, banging…). This develops a child’s understanding of the world and mirroring and acting out scenarios they have seen helps them make sense of it, benefiting their personal, social and emotional development.
We liked the fact that the children could have a go at using the tools, which promotes hand-eye coordination and teaches cause and effect logic (i.e. I hammer the peg and it fits in the hole), which is important for developing problem solving skills. However, some of the children found the screwing part tricky – our testers found that the product needed a lot of adult modelling and explaining. The children also enjoyed putting the tools away in the appropriate spaces; this led to lots of talk about sizes and shapes, which promotes spatial awareness, problem solving and develops numeracy skills.
