“Do you want some watermelon?” Boy aged 4
What our experts think
Free, imaginative play is the superfood of the balanced play diet and our testers loved being able to use this wooden play food to support their role play through many different real-life scenarios. This is great not only for encouraging their creativity but also for developing their understanding of the world around them and encouraging counting and sorting skills.
As this type of toy is open-ended, it was used to support a larger area of play, for example, as part of a market stall or kitchen. The shapes, colours and pictures on the wooden food were eye-catching and engaged our testers. It also promoted discussion between the children and their peers about their likes and dislikes, which is fantastic for developing vocabulary and communication skills.
