What our experts think
The Connetix 48 Piece Roads Creative Pack was received well by our testers. When they saw the picture on the front of the box, they were keen to get to work on building their own road configurations, and happy to play independently, not asking for any adult guidance.
They started by playing with the pieces freely, using the flat pieces as a starting point, then incorporating the ramps and arches to give their creations a more realistic 3D effect. When it was suggested they follow the booklet for further inspiration, they enjoyed the challenge of following the pictures, persevering when finding certain aspects difficult by rotating or repositioning pieces.
The children explored manipulating the different shapes; creating squares from rectangles (and vice versa), also circles from quarter circles, reinforcing their mathematical knowledge in a hands-on way.
Many of the children were immersed in their play for significant periods of time, also returning to play with the pieces several times. The set helps to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. Problem solving skills are honed and cause and effect learning comes into play.
Teamwork was observed as children began building their own small section of the road, then combined their part with what others had made to create larger and more complex configurations.
When the children decided their road layouts were complete, they were keen to incorporate toy cars into their play. Some role played going to get petrol or driving to the shops, while others enjoyed seeing how far the cars would travel when launched off the ramp.
