What do I need to play?

Before we start, let’s gather the materials you’ll need for this craft. Here’s what you’ll need:

• Yarn: Any type of yarn will do, but for beginners, we recommend a medium-weight yarn in a bright colour so that you can easily see your work.
• Scissors: A good pair of scissors will make your life a lot easier when it comes to trimming the pom poms.
• Cardboard: You’ll need some cardboard to make the pom pom templates.
• Pen or pencil: You’ll use this to trace your pom pom template onto the cardboard.
• Ruler: To make sure your cardboard template is the right size.

Once you have all of these materials, you’re ready to start!

Setting up the game

The first step in making pom poms is to create your pom pom templates. You can use any cardboard that you have lying around the house, such as cereal boxes or old packaging. Cut the cardboard into two identical circles (you can use a cup or any circular object to trace the circles) and cut a small hole in the middle of each circle.

Next, place the two cardboard circles on top of each other and wrap the yarn around them. You can use any colour you like. The more yarn you wrap, the fuller your pom pom will be. You can wrap the yarn around the cardboard as many times as you like, but we recommend around 50 times for a small pom pom and around 100 times for a larger one.

Once you’re happy with the amount of yarn, tie a knot tightly in the middle of the circles. You’ll notice that the cardboard circles will come apart, leaving you with a ball of yarn with two tails.

Rules of the game

The next step is to trim your pom pom. Using your scissors, cut through the loops of the yarn on both sides of the knot. Make sure to hold onto the tails so that your pom pom doesn’t fall apart. Once you’ve cut all the way around, give your pom pom a good shake to fluff it up.

At this point, you may notice that your pom pom is a bit uneven. Use your scissors to trim any excess yarn until it’s nice and round. Be careful not to trim too much, or you’ll end up with a flat pom pom.
